Last month, John Gunn was appointed to the FSC-US board to take the seat vacated in the environmental chamber by Ian Hanna, who has become FSC-US’s Director of Development.

John is a forest ecologist and Senior Program Leader in the Natural Capital Initiative at the Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, based in Brunswick, Maine. John has a B.S. in wildlife management from the University of Maine, an M.F.S. from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and a Ph.D. in biology from the University of New Brunswick studying the landscape ecology of forest songbirds. He has a broad background in sustainable forestry, including a position developing FSC-certified forest management systems for a large private landowner in Maine and extensive work on family forest and group certification issues throughout North America. This past experience includes work on more than 40 FSC forest management and chain of custody audits and assessments. John recently served on the FSC-US Standards Revision and Family Forests Standard working groups. At Manomet, John’s current work focuses on developing the tools and knowledge necessary to implement payments for ecosystem services programs (such as carbon sequestration and water quality) involving forest landowners. He hopes to use his auditing background, knowledge of family forest certification and ecosystem services to support FSC-US in its work.

“We’re thrilled to have John on the board,” says Corey Brinkema, president of FSC-US. “His considerable on-the-ground conservation experience, not to mention real experience with FSC forest management, is a significant asset.”

John’s appointment runs for eight months, after which time he will be able to run for re-election.
